What Socket.IO is
Socket.IO is an open-source library for realtime, bidirectional communication between browsers and a Node.js server, with rooms and automatic reconnection. It is not a game backend: there are no accounts, no validation, no matchmaking and no hosting.
Side by side
| Multiplayer API | Socket.IO | |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | fully hosted, nothing to run | you host a Node.js process |
| Price model | flat $19.99/month, unlimited games | your server costs |
| Transport | WebRTC peer-to-peer + automatic relay | WebSocket via your server |
| Validated state | declarative JSON rules | you write it |
| Accounts & leaderboards | built in | you build them |
| AI-agent setup | unauthenticated game creation + llms-full.txt | the agent writes a server you must deploy |

Choose Socket.IO if…
- You already run a Node backend and need a general realtime channel for more than a game.
- You want total control of a custom protocol.
Choose Multiplayer API if…
- Your game is a static site and should stay one.
- You do not want to write validation, reconnection, host migration and late-join catch-up yourself.
- You want players to connect directly over WebRTC.
Moving from Socket.IO: what maps to what
socket.emit('move', pos)→room.send(pos), delivered peer-to-peer.- Server-side game object in memory → shared state that survives reconnects and reaches late joiners.
io.to(room).emit('chat', …)→room.emitEvent('chat', …), ordered and rate-limited by rules.socket.join(roomId)+ your matchmaking →mp.quickmatch().- Your Node process, TLS, scaling, restarts → gone.
The concepts are covered in full in the documentation and in llms-full.txt, which a coding agent can use to do the port for you.
Try it in one call
curl -X POST https://multiplayerapi.com/v1/games \
-H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"name":"My Game","preset":"realtime_arena"}'Returns a public key, a secret key and a sandbox with 2 live rooms for 24 hours. No account, no card.
Can I replace Socket.IO in an existing game?
Yes. Socket emits of positions become room.send(), server-side state becomes shared state with rules, and broadcast messages become room.emitEvent().
