Photon alternative

Photon is the long-standing default for Unity multiplayer. If you build web games, small indie titles or many experiments, a flat price and an engine-agnostic API may fit better.

context

What Photon is

Photon (Exit Games) offers hosted realtime networking — Photon Realtime, PUN, Fusion and Quantum — with a strong Unity ecosystem and a pricing model based on peak concurrent users (CCU). It is proven at large scale and has deep engine integrations.

verdict

Choose Photon if…

  • You are building a large Unity title and want Photon Fusion or Quantum's deterministic netcode.
  • You need very high CCU with an enterprise contract.

Choose Multiplayer API if…

  • You ship browser games, or several small games, and want one flat bill.
  • You want accounts, leaderboards and validated state in the same API, not separate products.
  • An AI agent is writing your integration.
migration

Moving from Photon: what maps to what

  • Rooms and lobbies → mp.quickmatch({ mode, meta }) joins or creates in one call; custom room properties become free-form, filterable meta.
  • RaiseEvent for positions → room.send() on the direct channel: peer-to-peer, zero server cost.
  • Room and player custom properties → shared state (room.set, room.mine), with declarative rules that bound what each client may write.
  • Master client → the room host, with automatic, deterministic migration: listen to room.on('host', …).
  • Separate auth, leaderboard and economy services → built in: guest accounts, leaderboards with daily/weekly/monthly windows, inventory granted with the secret key.

The concepts are covered in full in the documentation and in llms-full.txt, which a coding agent can use to do the port for you.

test

Try it in one call

curl -X POST https://multiplayerapi.com/v1/games \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
  -d '{"name":"My Game","preset":"realtime_arena"}'

Returns a public key, a secret key and a sandbox with 2 live rooms for 24 hours. No account, no card.

Questions
Is Multiplayer API cheaper than Photon?

It depends on your scale. Multiplayer API is a flat $19.99/month for every game you run, with up to 128 players per room and 2,000 live rooms per game. CCU-based pricing can be cheaper at very small scale and very different at larger scale; compare with your own numbers.

Does Multiplayer API work with Unity like Photon?

Yes, through a UPM package. It is also engine-agnostic, so web and Unity builds share rooms.
