Colyseus alternative

Colyseus is a great open-source framework for authoritative game servers. The trade-off is that you write, deploy and operate that server.

context

What Colyseus is

Colyseus is an open-source Node.js framework: you write room logic in TypeScript on the server, and state is synchronized to clients with schema-based delta encoding. You self-host it, or pay for Colyseus Cloud.

verdict

Choose Colyseus if…

  • Your game needs a fully server-simulated world (physics on the server, hidden information).
  • You want to own and modify the server source.

Choose Multiplayer API if…

  • You do not want to write or operate server code at all.
  • Declarative rules (who writes what, at what rate, within which bounds) are enough authority for your game — true for most casual, turn-based, co-op and .io games.
  • You want positions to travel peer-to-peer instead of through a server you pay for.
migration

Moving from Colyseus: what maps to what

  • Room classes on the server → presets plus declarative rules. Logic that validated moves (“is it this player's turn?”) becomes cas and immutable rules.
  • Schema state → the JSON shared state. room.state.watch('players.*.hp', …) replaces schema change callbacks.
  • onMessage / broadcast → room.emitEvent(topic, data) for ordered, guaranteed messages; high-frequency input moves to room.send().
  • Reconnection tokens → nothing to do: rejoining is reconnecting, state survives, late joiners are caught up.
  • Your deployment → removed. The game becomes a static site.

The concepts are covered in full in the documentation and in llms-full.txt, which a coding agent can use to do the port for you.

Questions
Is Multiplayer API authoritative like Colyseus?

Partially, by design. Shared state is server-arbitrated against rules you declare, and match results can require peer attestation. It does not run your simulation; if you need that, Colyseus is the better fit.

Can I migrate a Colyseus room to Multiplayer API?

Usually: room state becomes the JSON shared state, server-side validation becomes declarative rules, and broadcast messages become events or the direct channel.
